Speed/Limit Privacy Policy
Last updated: April 9, 2026
Summary: Speed/Limit respects your privacy. We collect limited data to operate the app, optional account features, and service improvements. Your location is used only on your device for live speed monitoring and is not stored as a travel history on our servers.
1. Information We Collect
Location Data (GPS)
- Speed/Limit uses your device's GPS to determine your current speed and location.
- This data is processed entirely on your device.
- We do not upload, store, or track your location on any server.
Anonymous Analytics
- We use Firebase Analytics to collect anonymous usage statistics (e.g., app opens, feature usage).
- This data is aggregated and cannot identify you personally.
- We use Firebase Crashlytics to detect and fix app crashes.
Optional Account and Contribution Data
- If you choose to create an account for contribution, leaderboard, or cloud sync features, we store the authentication data provided through Firebase Authentication (such as your email address or sign-in provider).
- If you choose a display name, we store it with your account for leaderboard and contribution features.
- Speed limit corrections submitted from current versions of the app are stored in our Firebase/Firestore backend. Current versions of the app do not write those corrections directly to OpenStreetMap.
- Earlier versions of the app historically supported direct OpenStreetMap contributions, but that functionality is no longer part of the current app.
Purchase Information
- If you purchase a subscription, payment is handled entirely by Google Play.
- We receive only the subscription status (active/inactive) to unlock premium features.
- We do not store your payment details or billing information.
2. Information We Do NOT Collect
- We do not track or store your travel history or routes.
- We do not share any data with third parties for advertising or marketing.
- You do not need an account to use the app's core speed monitoring features.
3. OpenStreetMap and Contribution History
Speed/Limit uses OpenStreetMap data to look up speed limits. Current versions of the app no longer submit edits or notes directly to OpenStreetMap.
- Current versions use OpenStreetMap as a data source only.
- Earlier versions historically supported direct OpenStreetMap submissions, but that feature has been removed.
- OpenStreetMap has its own terms, privacy practices, and data licensing that apply to the map data we read.
4. Third-Party Services
Speed/Limit uses the following third-party services:
- OpenStreetMap Overpass API - To look up speed limit data for roads. Only your approximate location is sent (no personal data).
- Firebase Authentication - For optional account sign-in.
- Cloud Firestore - To store optional contribution, leaderboard, and account-linked settings data.
- Firebase Analytics & Crashlytics - For usage statistics and crash reporting.
- Google AdMob - To serve advertisements for free-tier users. AdMob may use device identifiers or location to serve relevant ads.
- Google Play Billing - If you purchase a subscription, payment is handled entirely by Google.
5. Data Storage
- Your preferences and settings are stored locally on your device.
- If you use optional account features, related account and contribution data are stored in Firebase services operated on our behalf.
6. Children's Privacy
Speed/Limit is not intended for use by children under 16. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
7. Your Rights
You can:
- Uninstall the app at any time to remove all local data.
- Disable location permissions in your device settings.
- Opt out of Firebase Analytics via your device's Google settings.
